Tips for Sellers When Moving
(The following is taken from Fraipont & Manyk Team’s website.)
Moving out of a house you have owned for a long time can be both time consuming and challenging. You have to take the time to figure out what needs to stay behind, what needs to come with you and making these decisions along with a whole host of other ones can be stressful. Here are some ideas for making your big move as calm and organised as possible.
Firstly, creating a schedule is a must; packing up a family`s possessions can take quite a while. Keep things organised with a moving and packing schedule. This way you can prioritise certain tasks that are urgent over others.
Whether you have hired movers to help you or are simply packing everything yourself, ensure that items that are particularly valuable or have sentimental meaning are kept separate to everything else and that you pack them yourself. Losing something so important could ruin the experience of moving into a new home. You should also make sure that financial and medical records are also kept separately, in case you need to access them quickly.
When moving address, it is important to update your records with the post office, as well as your bank and credit card companies. Remember to cancel or change the address on magazine subscriptions as well and of course don`t forget to let your relatives, friends and colleagues know where to contact you. Your utility companies need to be notified of your change of address as well; this is an important thing do as forgetting to let the gas and electric companies know can cost you money if the new residents are using the utilities under your name.
Another good tip is to label every box as you pack, on more than one side. Simply indicating which room the box belongs in will do, such as `living room` or `kitchen`. If you are packing things that could easily break, make sure you also write `fragile` on the box. Labelling like this can speed up the monotonous job of unpacking your things. When you first arrive its unlikely that you`ll feel like unpacking everything immediately; moving can be very tiring. So remember to have one box which contains everything you need for the next night and the morning after. Things like soap, toilet roll, plates and cups, cutlery, a scissors for opening boxes, snacks, water, toothpaste and some paper and pencils.
If you organise your move a month or two before the big day it won`t be anywhere near as stressful. Remember to buy packing supplies such as boxes of various sizes, as well as sellotape and labels. Book your moving truck several weeks beforehand, as moving companies tend to book up very quickly.
